Pre-ordering Stranger Than Heaven: paying with a card that matches your account region
The action title arrives January 15 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. Here is how the stores' card rules differ, how to prepare the payment, and what to do if it is declined.

What we know about the release and why payment deserves planning
The studio has shown a story trailer and announced the first act, 'Kokura.' The release is set for January 15 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. If you are picking it up at launch, it makes sense to place the pre-order early and settle the payment method at the same time — cards issued outside the account's country face their own requirements in foreign stores.
Three stores, three sets of rules
- Steam — the PC version. Your account region sets the currency and the price; you pay through Steam Wallet or directly by card.
- PlayStation Store — the PS5 version. Cost depends on the account's country: the US, the EU, Turkey, Ukraine and other regions are priced differently.
- Microsoft Store / Xbox — the Xbox Series X|S version. The account region affects the price here too.
Exact prices were not disclosed at the time of publication, so check the current rate in the store you choose. Regional differences can be substantial, but switching your Steam or PSN account region to save money is risky: platform rules restrict it, up to a ban.
How stores treat cards from foreign issuers
Visa and Mastercard issued outside the account's country are accepted, with caveats:
- Steam — friendly to foreign cards, but may request address verification (AVS) on the first payment. 3-D Secure is supported only by some issuing banks.
- PlayStation Store — expects the card's country to match the account's country. When regions differ, the card is often declined.
- Microsoft Store — same logic: card and account regions must match, otherwise the payment will not go through.
This is where a virtual card helps: in the VirtCardHub hub you can issue a card in the required currency and link it to an account in the matching region without touching the account itself.
Paying with a virtual card: the sequence
- Decide on the store and account region. For Steam the wallet region is enough; for consoles the account country must match the card's issuing country.
- Issue a virtual card in the required currency (USD, EUR, etc.) in your dashboard at virtcardhub.com or via the @virtcardhubbot bot.
- Top up with a buffer: the game price, possible conversion, and a small amount for card verification.
- In the store, choose 'Add payment method' and enter the details. On Steam you can pay for the purchase right away without saving the card.
- Confirm via 3-D Secure if your issuing bank supports it: the code arrives in the app or by email.
- Check that the game shows up in your library. When a pre-order is charged depends on the store.
Current issuance and top-up terms are in the bot.
Balance and when the charge lands
On Steam and Microsoft Store, pre-orders are usually charged immediately. PlayStation Store may charge a few days before release. Keep a buffer on the card for conversion and exchange-rate movement. If the card is in USD but the price is in EUR, the issuing bank converts at its own rate.
Payment declined: what to check
- Whether the card region and account region match — especially for PSN and Xbox.
- Whether there are enough funds including pre-authorization: some stores temporarily hold a small amount for verification.
- Whether a VPN is interfering: a mismatch between the IP address and the account region often causes a decline. Try another browser and turn the tunnel off.
- If the card will not pass on PlayStation Store, a fallback is a PSN gift card for the right region redeemed on the account.
- For Steam, topping up the wallet with Steam gift cards from the same region works the same way.
Digital copies and regional restrictions
No physical delivery is involved: these are digital versions. But if you redeem a key from retail, the key's region must fit the account. Buy keys only from official sellers.
FAQ
Will a VirtCardHub card work if my Steam account is in another region?
Steam accepts foreign cards, but address verification may be required on the first payment. The card's country and the wallet region must match.
Why does PlayStation Store reject my virtual card?
Most often the card region does not match the account's country. Issue a card in the account region's currency or use a PSN gift card.
When is the pre-order charged?
On Steam and Microsoft Store — immediately; on PlayStation Store — a few days before the January 15 release. Keep enough funds on the card with a buffer.
